Nebraska Medicaid payments for non-oral drug administration climb to $1,688,828 in 2024

Nebraska Medicaid payments reached $1,688,828 in 2024 for services under the Drugs Administered Other than Oral Method category, as shown by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This shows a 16.2% increase from the $1,453,305 claimed in 2023.

Medicaid is administered by states and funded with both federal and state resources. It provides health coverage to low-income individuals, families, seniors, children and those with disabilities, making it a central part of the U.S. health care system.

As Medicaid is paid for with taxpayer funds, fluctuations in local billing reflect how health expenditures are allocated in each community.

The “Drugs Administered Other than Oral Method” category encompasses services billed according to the method of care delivered, based on grouped HCPCS and CPT codes. Each code was consistently categorized using prefixes and numeric bands, making it possible to review related services together, avoid double-counting, and maintain accurate year-to-year rankings.

When relevant, categories may represent multiple individual services, covering care that is often billed together under Medicaid, such as diagnostic tests, therapeutic treatments or office visits.

From 2019 through 2024, Nebraska Medicaid payments for the Drugs Administered Other than Oral Method category rose by $367,852, or 27.8%. There were notable jumps in annual growth during certain periods, including the year 2021.

Although spending in this category was distributed across Nebraska, the majority was concentrated in a handful of ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP Code 68138 accounted for $527,821 (31.3% of the total), ZIP Code 68128 reported $367,423 (21.8%), and ZIP Code 68901 represented $263,172 (15.6%).

Together, these three ZIP codes made up 68.6% of all Drugs Administered Other than Oral Method Medicaid payments statewide for the year.

Statewide Medicaid claim payments across all categories rose 22.4% comparing 2023 with 2024.

Among various service types seeing higher spending, the Drugs Administered Other than Oral Method category was one of Nebraska’s top 15 Medicaid service areas by total payouts for 2024.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services report that combined national Medicaid spending reached approximately $871.7 billion for fiscal year 2023, or about 18% of all U.S. health expenditures, up from $613.5 billion in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

This represents almost 40% growth in just four years, primarily due to greater Medicaid enrollment and increased service usage during and after the pandemic.

Under recent federal budget measures enacted during the Trump administration, several major efforts to curtail federal Medicaid funding or modify the program have been adopted. Notably, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which became law in 2025, is expected to trim more than $1 trillion from Medicaid federal funding over 10 years. It also implements policies like work requirements and higher cost sharing, with the potential to impact coverage and reduce federal resources for some recipients. Such changes are projected to shift increased costs to state governments and slow federal funding growth, even as public demand remains high.
