Volleyball1000

Goucher College issued the following announcement on Oct. 5.

The Goucher College volleyball team stormed back from a 2-0 deficit against Hollins on Friday evening, as the Gophers took three straight sets to record a come-from-behind 3-2 victory inside the Decker SRC Arena (23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 16-14).

With the win, Goucher moved to 8-11 overall, while Hollins fell to 9-8 with the defeat.

In the win, things could not have gotten off to a worse start for the Gophers, as Hollins captured the first two sets by a combined five points to go up 2-0 entering the third set.

With their backs against the wall, the Gophers began their comeback in the third set, gutting out a 25-22 win. In the fourth set, Goucher took control late, rolling to a 25-16 win to take plenty of momentum with them into the fifth and final set.

There, it was a seesaw affair throughout, with the match coming to a head knotted up at 14-all. First, Goucher went back up, 15-14, on a kill by sophomore Greta Coss (Bowie, Md.). Then, first-year Cat Hartley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished off Hollins for the night by recording an ace on the final serve of the match, lifting Goucher to the thrilling win on a tie-break in the fifth set.

Overall on the night, several Gophers put up huge nights in their respective positions.

Leading the attack was first-year Kaya Melchor (Mililani, Hawaii), who finished the evening with a team-high 19 kills, Just behind Melchor in the kill category was Coss, who ended the game with 18 kills. Both marks were season-bests for Melchor and Coss on the attack, as well.

Elsewhere, sophomore Bianco Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) ended the night with 15 kills to finish out the top attackers for Goucher. Setting things up all night was first-year Tes DeJaeger (Norwalk, Conn.), who finished with 56 assists, while also posting 16 digs on defense.

Leading the defense in the win was Harley, who had 21 digs, while also recording four service aces.

It'll be a quick turnaround for the Goucher College volleyball team, as they host a pair of matches on Saturday at the Decker SRC Arena. First, Goucher takes on Lehman at 12 noon, followed by a contest with Eastern Mennonite at 4 p.m.
