City of Baltimore issued the following announcement on March 5.
“I am writing to provide you with an update on the outbreak of severe respiratory illnesses caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus, now called COVID-19, and BCHD’s response actions. I have also personally been in contact with Maryland Secretary of Health, Richard Neall and convened an emergency cabinet meeting yesterday to update officials on the administration’s efforts related to the coronavirus.
“COVID-19 continues to spread worldwide and there are now significant numbers of cases in several countries. The CDC updated its criteria for evaluating a person under investigation (PUI) for COVID-19 on February 27th and expanded travel advisories related to COVID-19 to include China, Iran, Italy, Japan, and South Korea. The first two deaths of US citizens in the United States from COVID-19 occurred in Washington State on Saturday, February 29 and to date, nine deaths have been reported. There are currently no cases in Baltimore and no confirmed cases in Maryland. Ten Marylanders tested negative this week for COVID-19 and there are eleven pending test results.
