BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown issued the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v. Wade:
“One year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a devastating blow to basic rights of Americans by overturning Roe v. Wade in an outrageous and harmful decision that stripped away the fundamental right of individuals to control their own healthcare decisions. This decision set us back 50 years as we continue to witness the erosion of reproductive rights in anti-choice states across the country. The decision increased risks to the health and well-being of people throughout the nation, and erected more barriers to pursuing socioeconomic opportunities, with a disproportionate impact on people of color and those in overburdened communities.
“We've been in the trenches, fighting for reproductive freedom every step of the way, and will never stand down while these rights are under assault in this country. We sued the FDA, challenging burdensome and unnecessary restrictions on the safe and effective abortion drug Mifepristone; we stood with defendants against zealous anti-choice organizations attempting to strip away all access to the medication; we defended the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act’s provisions that require abortion services be provided in an emergency; and, while other states are targeting patients and abortion healthcare service providers for civil – and even criminal – charges, we testified in favor of legislation, now signed into law by Governor Moore, that ensures high-quality, affordable reproductive health services are available to Marylanders and shields the identifying information of anyone who obtains or provides reproductive health services in the state from out-of-state investigations that could threaten their privacy, safety, and liberty. In addition, we urged the federal government to add provisions to HIPAA to protect private health information so that it cannot be weaponized or used to discriminate against patients seeking care or care providers.
“Make no mistake - Maryland, and other states that recognize and value reproductive freedom, will continue to preserve the right of individuals to make their own reproductive healthcare choices. I will always stand firm in protecting and defending these rights.”
