Baltimore County Board of Education issued the following announcement on Feb. 22.
When new trees are planted in a park, who monitors their growth and health? Sometimes the answer is nearby elementary school students.
In January 2019, the Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability planted 230 trees in Carroll Manor Park. Carroll Manor Elementary students have been monitoring the new forest.
Last year during MakerSpace rotations, students in Grades K-5 monitored the new forest. They identified the trees in spring and searched for evidence of life in the young forest. Last year, Grade 2 students each adopted a tree. This year, now that they are in Grade 3, those same students are continuing to care for their trees during their MakerSpace special. Part of that care includes making identification tags for their trees and writing Haiku poems about their trees.
